Veneers
When it comes to cosmetic dentistry, Eastgate Dental Excellence has a variety of treatments available, and each offers a different level of smile enhancement. If you have no serious structural issues and want to improve the overall appearance of your smile in a big way, then veneers might be the perfect cosmetic dentistry treatment for you.
What Are Veneers?
Sometimes called porcelain or resin laminates, veneers are wafer-thin shells or partial caps made to mount onto the front, visible portion of your teeth.
The Two Types of Veneers
Composite Veneers – Composite veneers are molded from composite resin. They offer faster results as they can be molded and applied in a single dental appointment. However, they are not as long-lasting nor as natural-looking as porcelain veneers. Composite resin also stains more easily.
Porcelain Veneers – Veneers crafted from porcelain are by far the most popular type of veneer. Porcelain is a highly durable material, stain-resistant, and it closely resembles the natural look of tooth enamel because it reflects light in a very similar way. Porcelain veneers typically require two dental appointments: the first for measuring teeth and ordering a set of veneers and the second for prepping your teeth and affixing your new set of veneers.
What Are Veneers Used For?
Unlike caps or crowns that provide structural support and protection to natural teeth while also improving their appearance, veneers are simply used to mask imperfections. Veneers can be used to achieve the following smile improvements:
- Cover stains and discoloration and create an evenly colored smile where all the teeth match
- Cover amalgam fillings
- Fill in gaps between the teeth
- Create the appearance of straighter teeth
- Make teeth look proportionally sized to one another
- Improve the appearance of misshapen teeth
Dental veneers can create an overall better-looking smile with a more balanced, symmetrical, and uniform appearance.
What to Expect When Getting Veneers
Porcelain veneers require two dental appointments. Our dentists talk with you about your smile goals and the look you want to achieve with your new porcelain veneers during the first appointment. We then take measurements and images of your teeth to ensure your new veneers are the proper size and shape.
During your second appointment, we prepare your teeth by shaving off a thin layer of tooth enamel so that your new set of veneers fit properly over the surface of your teeth. Finally, we affix the veneers to your teeth using a permanent dental adhesive.
How Long Do Veneers Last?
Porcelain veneers can last up to 15 years with proper care. However, chewing on hard objects, grinding your teeth, or clenching your jaw puts extra wear and tear on veneers and can shorten their lifespan.
