Cosmetic Dentistry FAQ
Your smile is one of the most important first impressions you make. At Eastgate Dental Excellence, we believe that cosmetic dentistry should not only enhance beauty but also support function and health. Below are answers to common questions to help you decide what treatment is right for you.
Why are teeth shaved down for crowns?
When placing a dental crown (also called a cap), our dentists trim or “prepare” the natural tooth by shaving away a layer of enamel. This creates space for the crown to fit over the tooth without making your bite too bulky or misaligned. The shaping also ensures a smooth margin where the crown meets the gum line and allows the custom-made crown to blend seamlessly.
How is a crown a cosmetic dental treatment?
Crowns aren’t just for restoring damaged teeth—they also serve aesthetic purposes. At Eastgate, crowns are used cosmetically to cover stains, mask discoloration, hide unsightly fillings, and adjust or balance the shape of teeth. When placed near the front of the mouth, porcelain crowns look very natural and help improve your smile’s symmetry and color.
Which is faster, braces or Invisalign?
Invisalign often works faster than traditional braces, especially for mild to moderate alignment issues. It uses a series of clear, removable trays that gradually move your teeth. Braces may be required for more complex cases. With any solution, the duration of orthodontic treatment varies based on the degree of misalignment your teeth initially have.
Can I drink coffee with Invisalign?
Yes—but with care. Because Invisalign aligner trays are removable, you should take them out when you eat or drink anything except water. Coffee can stain your teeth and possibly discolor your aligners if worn while drinking. After finishing your drink, brush your teeth before putting the trays back in to avoid trapping stains.
Is bonding better than veneers?
It depends on your goals and the condition of your teeth. Dental bonding is a less invasive procedure that can be completed in a single visit, making it ideal for addressing small chips, gaps, or mild discoloration. It uses a composite resin that matches the color of your teeth. Dental Veneers (porcelain or composite) achieve more dramatic changes and last longer—especially porcelain veneers. But veneers require more tooth preparation, involve more steps, and generally cost more.
