Dental Crowns
Dental crowns have both cosmetic and restorative uses in dental care. At Eastgate Dental Excellence, our dentists can help you take advantage of both with a wide range of dental crown treatments available.
What Is a Dental Crown?
Sometimes called a dental cap, a dental crown is a custom-made covering designed to fit over the entire portion of a tooth that is above the gum line.
What Are Dental Crowns Made Of?
Crowns can be made from a variety of materials including porcelain, ceramic, metals, and porcelain fused to metal.
When crowns are placed for cosmetic purposes or near the front of the mouth where they will be visible, 100% porcelain is the most popular material choice as it offers a natural look that will blend in seamlessly with your surrounding teeth.
Dental Crown Applications in Cosmetic and Restorative Dentistry
How Are Crowns Used in Cosmetic Dentistry?
In cosmetic dentistry, dental crowns are used to cover stains on your enamel, mask tooth discoloration, hide amalgam fillings, or change the shape of a tooth for a more balanced and symmetrical smile.
How Are Crowns Used in Restorative Dentistry?
In restorative dentistry, dental crowns are commonly used to preserve a patient’s teeth that have been severely damaged from an injury or tooth decay.
Since they’re designed to fit over an entire tooth, crowns protect and support a tooth’s original structure, preventing a compromised tooth from needing to be extracted.
Dental crowns are frequently used to protect a tooth after a root canal or a serious break. Additionally, crowns are used as teeth replacements in dental implants and as anchors for dental bridges.
What to Expect When Getting a Dental Crown
Getting a dental crown typically requires two dental appointments. During the first appointment, we’ll file your tooth to make room for your crown to fit comfortably over it. We will also take dental x-rays and impressions of your teeth to send to the lab where your custom-made crown will be manufactured. This ensures a perfect fit and proper bite alignment with your neighboring teeth. Finally, we’ll fit you with a temporary crown that will protect your tooth until your new crown is ready.
Once your custom-made crown is ready, we’ll schedule your appointment for placement. During your crown placement appointment, our dentists will first use a local anesthetic to thoroughly numb your tooth and the surrounding area. This ensures you don’t experience any pain, sensitivity, or discomfort during the appointment.
We will then clean and dry the tooth and permanently affix your new crown using special dental cement.
