Dental Hygiene/Exams
What to Expect During a Dental Exam at Eastgate Dental Excellence
Routine dental exams are all about maintaining our patient’s oral health with comprehensive care, a thorough examination, and patient education.
Professional Dental Cleaning
When you come to us for your dental appointment, we begin with a thorough cleaning performed by one of our skilled dental hygienists. During a professional cleaning, we use special tools to scale and polish every crevice of your teeth.
Our professional dental cleaning services not only improve the look of your smile by breaking up and lifting stains from the surface of your teeth, but they also protect your smile’s health by removing the plaque and tartar that accumulate between appointments.
This thorough cleaning helps keep your teeth and gums healthy by preventing periodontal disease, tooth decay, and other oral health problems.
Consultation, Dental Examination, and Health Screening
During a consultation and examination, our dentists check in with you about your oral health, hygiene, and smile goals. We answer any questions you have and talk with you about any changes you may have noticed since your last exam. We also ensure your medical history and list of medications on file are current.
Our dentists then examine your mouth, looking for signs, symptoms, or changes that could indicate a dental problem or a general health concern because many systemic issues, like diabetes, can be detected with an examination of the mouth, face, or neck. Additionally, we also screen patients for signs and symptoms of oral cancer.
If we detect anything of concern during your dental exam, we will discuss further diagnostic testing if needed, the diagnosis, and your treatment options.
X-Rays or Intraoral Imaging
Occasionally, we recommend taking a set of dental x-rays to screen patients for oral health problems that could be occurring inside the teeth or below the gum line. We might also recommend dental x-rays if needed for diagnosis.
How Often Do I Need to Visit the Dentist?
Every patient is different, but we typically recommend scheduling a dental appointment every six months for optimal wellness.
We might recommend more frequent visits for children or patients who have been diagnosed with periodontal disease or other health problems that put them at a higher risk of oral health problems.
How to Maintain Dental Hygiene at Home
Caring for your teeth between professional dental exams is essential to maintaining good health. Patients should brush and floss their teeth at least twice a day and follow all personalized at-home dental care instructions provided by our dentists.
