Implant-Support Dentures
What Are Implant-Supported Dentures?
Implant-supported dentures (also sometimes referred to as snap-on dentures) are similar to traditional dentures except that they snap into place.
Usually supported by four or more strategically placed dental implants, implant-supported dentures are designed to snap onto dental implant abutments for a securely fixed, firm fit that closely mimics normal function when chewing and speaking.
Why Choose Implant-Supported Dentures?
Snapped in place, implant-supported dentures never slide, slip, or move around like traditional dentures sometimes can. As a result, there is no need to use any sticky dental adhesives because implant-supported dentures offer a more secure feel and natural function. So, you can enjoy eating all of your favorite foods without worrying about your dentures getting pushed or pulled out of place.
Additionally, their firm fit also prevents blisters or sores from forming due to your dentures rubbing against your soft gum tissue.
How to Care for Implant-Supported Dentures
Although they firmly snap into place during the day, implant-supported dentures, like traditional dentures, should be removed at night for an overnight soak in a dentist-recommended denture cleansing solution and gentle brushing with a soft-bristled denture brush the next morning. Finally, you should gently wipe your gums with a soft, damp washcloth before snapping your dentures back into place.
What’s the Process of Getting Implant-Supported Dentures
Getting traditional dentures simply requires an appointment for taking measurements and impressions of your mouth, a waiting period while the dentures are manufactured, and an appointment for a fitting.
Implant-supported dentures require a slightly more lengthy process since they involve the placement of dental implants. As a result, you will first have a dental implant consultation during which we’ll assess your jawbone structure, gum health, and general health to determine whether or not you’re a candidate for implants.
Implant placement then requires a surgical procedure for placing the implant posts and a healing period during which the posts heal into your jawbone. Finally, we place the abutments. Once you’re fully healed, we will then place and fit the implant-supported dentures.
The entire process from consultation to denture fitting can require several months or longer if bone grafting is needed before dental implant placement.
During your consultation, our dentists can help you determine what kind of process to expect and answer any additional questions you might have.
